It Happened Right Before Our Eyes!

Magical Day in Kindergarten

It was pouring rain outside which meant indoor recess.  The students were engaging in play when all of a sudden one student exclaims, "It is coming!  It is poking out!"  The students dropped everything and came over to watch the miracle of life happen right in front of their eyes.  The looks on my students' faces was simply PRICELESS.

We had been watching the chrysalis for the last seven days and I knew it could have been any moment.  When the adult butterfly emerged from the pupa stage the students were so concerned that is was struggling or that it was so small.  As the wings began to unfold and the adult butterfly held on resting, the students again thought something was wrong.  But as we began Daily 5 Rotations I assured the students that the butterfly needed to pump it blood into its wings in order to get the wings flapping.

As we neared the end of the school day the butterfly was flying our the butterfly cage.  The students held the butterfly; some were apprehensive but most were extremely brave and all were careful. What a magical day!
